This is the densest genuinely provenance-safe scientific thread in the released corpus. Of 154 documents mentioning synthetic biology, codons or attenuation, only nine survive anchoring — and eight of them are this thread.

The Dinner, and What Followed It
On 4 January 2010 there was a dinner at Epstein’s New York house.
The next morning, from Miami airport, Nikolic wrote: "Great seeing you last night — as always indeed… I liked Jean Luc he is really very French."
The same email closes: "If you get bored in NYC or would like to meet some new talent there, just send Sam an email or call him."
Everything on the rest of this page begins in that thread. The science and the procurement are not separate correspondences. They are the same one.

What Codon Deoptimisation Is
The science here is real, published and legitimate, and it is worth stating plainly because the phrase "synthetic biology and viruses" invites worse readings than the documents support.
The genetic code is redundant. Most amino acids can be specified by several different three-letter codons — swap one and the protein is unchanged. But organisms have preferences about which synonymous codons they use, and in which pairs.
Codon deoptimisation exploits that. Rewrite a virus’s genome using hundreds of synonymous but disfavoured codon pairs, and you leave every protein identical while making the virus replicate far more slowly. The result is an organism that is antigenically the same but badly weakened — which is what a live attenuated vaccine requires.
This is what Nikolic sent. The attachment is the 2008 Science paper on virus attenuation by genome-scale changes in codon pair bias. His covering line names the application: "how this could be used to prevent infection (immunize) host to various pathogens — in this case Polio."
Three years later Epstein was setting polio funding at a million a year per region.

The Warning Was Unprompted
Eight minutes after the vaccine email, Nikolic sent a second one framing the same field as a hazard.
"During our discussion yesterday we briefly mentioned syntethic biology and viruses. During last few years some new great tools were generated, common repository of tools/sequences created, and common platform established — most of that without regulatory framework."
His own assessment followed: that if something went wrong it would likely be "not because of bad intention to hurt people (terrorism and such) but rather because biology is much more unpredictable." Two weeks later he sent the Nature synthetic-biology supplement, noting that "terrorists will quickly catch up."
This reads as a scientist briefing a funder on a field’s risks — not as planning. The documents give no indication Epstein sought this framing, and none that he acted on it. Unresolved

He Passed It On Within a Day
On 17 January 2010 — the day after Nikolic sent the codon-pair paper — Epstein wrote it out himself.
"Most amino acids are encoded by several different codons. For example, if the third base in the TCT codon for serine is changed to any one of the other three bases, serine will still be encoded. Such mutations are said to be silent because they cause no change in their product and cannot be detected without…"
The recipient was Eva Dubin.
This changes what the thread shows. It is not a man being sent papers he may or may not have read. Within twenty-four hours he had absorbed the mechanism accurately enough to explain codon degeneracy and silent mutations in his own words, and chose to.
What the January 2010 conversation was ultimately for. Nikolic refers to a discussion the previous evening; that conversation is not in the record.
And nothing here suggests Nikolic knew what else was happening in that house. He was a scientist briefing a donor — in a thread that also offered to introduce that donor to "new talent."
